It is a texture pack, and it is on .vtf format, which you can edit with Paint.NET or Photoshop, and convert them for usage on the Goldsource engine games (Half-Life, Counter Strike, Day of Defeat), with their correspondent plugins, other than that, you shouldn't have any problems with them.

Perhaps, I can't really say. I would almost run a check on the harddrive sectors themselves to make sure its not been corrupted in some way where .vmf files are being scrambled to create invalid solids.

They are invalid solids created from vertex manipulation and in some cases carving etc.

Just make sure to use the clipping tool to create shapes that can exist and are not warped.
