Guild Wars is an episodic series of multiplayer online role-playing games, for the Microsoft Windows operating system, created by ArenaNet, a Seattle game development studio and a subsidiary of the South Korean game publisher NCsoft. As of June 2007, three episodes (called campaigns) have been released. Each campaign features a particular continent of a common fictional game world, and premieres new classes, mechanics, and competitive modes. A fourth campaign was known to be in production, but was later replaced with an expansion pack.

Although strictly a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG), Guild Wars has important differences from other games in this genre; to emphasize these distinctions, ArenaNet calls the Guild Wars games competitive online role-playing games (CORPGs). Primary among the differences from other commercial MMORPGs is that Guild Wars has no subscription fees: players are offered unlimited playing time on the game servers and their accounts never expire. Guild Wars also has several features designed to promote casual play by reducing grind: low maximum levels, instanced game zones, player-managed NPC henchmen (similar to bots), and instant travel between in-game outposts, for example.

A key design goal for Guild Wars is "balanced competitive gaming". Player characters may be created at the maximum level specifically for player versus player (PvP) matches, and equipment and skills in the game are balanced to ensure a level playing field for such characters. ArenaNet monitors the usage of the gameplay elements and publishes regular game updates to maintain balance and promote variety in competitive strategies and tactics. ArenaNet regularly hosts official Guild Wars tournaments where the most successful player guilds may compete for the chance to play live at gaming conventions and win cash prizes up to 100,000 USD.

Anyone want to do the Underworld any time soon. Me and a friend are gonna try it tonight or tomorrow.

None of my characters are nearly good enough to run that. Sorry. :/

Seeing that all the new games like it are coming out and more people are able to pay per month now.
Although gouldwars still is a great game and one of the best if not the best game I have played in the MMO RPG catagory.

You just can't stick wiht one game to too long.

Guild Wars isn't an MMO.

I thought MMO meant Massive Multiplayer Online, thus making it an MMORPG.

And to answer your question, there are still about 5.5 million players.

I think that's massive enough. :D

Guild Wars is almost completely instanced, making it not an MMO. It is in the same class as Diablo 2, it is a CORPG (Co-Operative Role Playing Game). Games like City of Heroes and World of Warcraft are MMOs because very little is instanced and everything else is open world.

I downloaded the client, and it's taking forever to load up just 1 map. Is it because it's the first time playing it on my system that it has to load all the graphics up ect or is it because I didn't use the install discs?
It's been here for like 6 minutes and it hasn't hit 1%

It 's downloading the entire game off their servers, so it's gonna take awhile.

Is this game still as active as it was before? I have Prophecies and Nightfall and I was thinking of getting back into the game,

I play it off and on. I've kinda lost my incentive since I beat all the campaigns, but I'll probably come back to it sooner or later.
